The Hombo family, who established Mars Whisky, started making shochu in 1909 and gradually expanded their line of products to include whisky, which is now their most well-known offering. Presently, Mars has two distilleries and one more location for maturing. Mars Shinshu is the first distillery established in 1985, but was placed on hold between 1992 and 2011. Situated in the town of Miyada, in the Nagano Alps, making this distillery the highest in Japan. A wide variety of blended and single malt expressions can be made with gentle and delicate glacier water, which is abundant in Nagano due to its temperate climate and copious snowfall. Mars Tsunuki Distillery is situated in Kagoshima, in southern Japan and the Yakushima Aging Cellar is found on the island of Yakushima, which is recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. In November 2016, the second whisky distillery in Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima prefecture, started to operate and begin distillation.
