The Akkeshi Daikan is a superb blended whisky from this up and coming distillery situated on the picturesque island of Hokkaido. It is the distillery’s sixth release to date, with the preceding bottles quickly gaining notoriety for their quality. It was created by blending Akkeshi single malts matured in Quercus serrata (a unique type of oak), Sherry, bourbon and wine barrels, with imported grain whisky that adds weight to the expression. The notes mingle in perfect harmony, with the sweetness of oranges and strawberries being balanced out by bitter lemon on the nose. The palate brings milk chocolate, more citrus fruits and a tickle of sea salt before the finish holds with creamy cocoa and gentle pepper spice.
It’s a brilliant creation that we would highly recommend trying while bottles are available.
