Nikka Whisky 17 Years Old
One of Nikka’s classic brands in Japan. This Nikka has been a top seller since its introduction in 1962. This blend provides a subtle harmony of fruit, with light peat and sherry cask notes. This is also presented in a very attractive box!
Of Nikka’s two malt whisky distilleries, Yoichi produces rich, peaty and masculine malt. The whisky gets its distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal–the traditional method that is hardly ever used today, even in Scotland.
It has a dark toffee colour and a big rich nose, with fruitcake, raisins, currants. Lots of dried fruits on the nose. On the palate, it’s smooth at first, then a bit sharp on the tongue. Warming, but a little cloying. Again, like the nose, there’s fruitcake on the palate – not spicy, like a Christmas pudding, but more like a mellow wedding cake. Some maltiness, too. It’s nice and drinkable, but there’s a little, sharp burning, with alcohol on the lips. A drop of water smooths it out and takes the edge off. Not spectacular, but a very good, everyday quality blend.
