Today, it is the country’s largest and most recognizable producer of quality whisky. Yamazaki 12 Year black box was introduced to the market in 1984 and was the first seriously marketed Japanese single malt whisky.
Created by marrying malts of 12 years and older, all of which had been matured solely in virgin Mizunara oak casks, this delightful whisky is smooth, flavour-packed and incredibly moreish. It brings pineapple, orange and nutmeg on the nose before honey, coconut cream and blueberries arrive on the palate. The finish is medium length and somewhat smoky, with vanilla and ginger lingering in the background.
For the Blossom Harmony, the blenders at Suntory married Hibiki liquid with Sakura cask finished whisky, allowing us to explore their fine craftsmanship from a completely new angle. The Shizuoka Pot Still K is a fantastic new whisky that looks to follow on from its popular predecessor, the Prologue K, in real style. Upon it’s founding, the Shizuoka distillery owners purchased some of the left over equipment from the defunct Karuizawa distillery and it was in a ex-Karuizawa still that this fine whisky was created. Distilled from half imported malt and half home-grown malt, it was then aged for 3 years in bourbon barrels, before being bottled.

Nikka is one of our favorite Japanese companies; not only does it make world quality whisky, but its foundation story is also so intriguing that it is the subject of a television drama. The Miyagikyo is its second distillery, being founded in Sendai in 1969. This Miyagikyo bottle was strictly selected from among the finest malts, distilled and matured in a sherry cask.
