Yamazaki is Japan’s oldest whisky distillery opened in 1923, it was founded by Shinjiro Torii near Oaska. The location was chosen because of the excellent water supply in the area. This seems to have payed off, today Single Malts from the Yamazaki distillery has the largest share of any single malts whiskies in Japan. The 18 year old Yamazaki Single Malts is thought by many to be the best whisky in the world and has for example won six consecutive double gold medals at the San Francisco Spirits Competitions from 2008 to 2013.

Nose: Big hit of banana to start. Pineapple, peaches, butterscotch, walnuts, sawdust, honeyed porridge, guava, papaya, caramel, oak. Water adds an incense/sweet tobacco note. Palate: Hot spices of pepper, cayenne, ginger. Some nuttiness, banana, papaya, salt, sawdust, sweetened pink grapefruit, rum, such as Ron Zacapa XO Centenario. Water adds dragon fruit and a nicer balance between heat and sweet. Finish: Papaya, rum, banana, a mineral element, butter menthols, then drying oak, and right at the death, pineapple.
