Taiko Nakamura, president of Scotch whisky importer Gaia Flow, created it in 2016. While the original Karuizawa still and the new spirit still are steam heated, the distillery uses wood-fired heating for the wash still to create two distinct varieties of new make spirit, known as K and W. These two spirits are combined to create Shizuoka Contact S. The wood-fired W has a deeper flavor and a longer finish, while the steam-heated K emits fruity scents and a lighter flavor. Flavored with earthy flavors and a faint, soft wood smoke, along with sweet caramel, grilled mangoes, and stewed apples. Got peaches and nectarines from the Shizuoka Contact S in addition to some ingenious agricultural notes and a hint of fennel with excellent oily mouthfeel. A peppery beginning accompanied by creamy vanilla, tobacco, earthy smoke, and sandal wood. Water reveals hints of dulce de leche, smoky malt, and gingerbread. It's not as fruity as the nose, but there are hints of lychee and orange peel. It's a lengthy finish that focuses more on the aforementioned.
