Established in 1910, the Kurayoshi Distillery is part of the Matsui Shuzo brewery, producing sake and shochu. It is situated in the Tottori Prefecture at the base of Mount Daisen. It contains excellent water, which is necessary to produce whisky. Story has it that the word "good living" is where Kurayoshi got its start, however the whisky ages more quickly here than it does back home due to the strong temperature variations on the Sea of Japan side. The claim that whisky is manufactured naturally is not an overstatement. The newest distillery, Kurayoshi Distillery, is regarded as the leading example of Japan's aqua vitae whisky.
