The Earth is Where it all Begins

Tsuchi means earth in Japanese. It is a fitting name for a whisky defined by its farm-to-bottle philosophy.

By using 100% of its own organic barley, Kiyokawa creates a whisky that is inseparable from the earth from which its core ingredient grows.

The earth provides the sustenance that gives the barley life and ultimately shapes the whisky’s character and flavor profile at the earliest stage.

From Soil to Spring

Tsuchi begins in the earth. Kiyokawa grows its own barley in the mountain fields around the distillery, using organic farming practices, in the soil of Iiyama. It is the only true farm-to-bottle distillery in Japan.

Then comes the water. Pure, pristine mountain spring water is what Kiyokawa makes its whisky with. Soil and spring, with nothing borrowed.

Bottled at cask strength from a first-fill Oloroso Sherry cask, Tsuchi carries the character of the place it came from. Just 290 bottles, made to be collected, and to be savoured.

Single ex-Oloroso cask & Storied Design

The Tsuchi is the first release from Kiyokawa that has been matured in an ex-Oloroso Sherry cask, which has imparted a wonderful array of rich and fruity notes onto the Cask Strength spirit.

The bottle design depicts Kiyokawa Distillery at harvest time, capturing the landscape of Iiyama as the barley fields reach maturity.

It represents a defining moment in the distillery’s year, when the fruits of the earth are gathered and the land reveals its yield.

The washi paper label is adorned with silver foil and the bottle is finished with a stunning, green wax seal.

It's a tribute to Tsuchi, and to the soil that gives Kiyokawa whisky its beginning.
