Karuizawa Distillery was established in 1955 in the foothills of Mount Asama, an active volcano north-west of Tokyo, to make single malt in as traditional a manner as possible. At 850 metres above sea level, the distillery was the highest above sea levels in Japan; low temperatures and high humidity provided an ideal micro-climate for whisky production. This particular Karuizawa 1981 is “The Great Battle Of Yashima” release. It is a single cask whisky distilled in cask # 164. It is presented in an original box, this is truly a collector’s item!

Nose: Very savory nose with a big hint of soot & smoke, hint of menthol, then become more complex. There are also hints of very dark Dundee cake, molasses, dried autumn leaves and very old, soft leather. Palate: Massive entry, as you’d expect from its strength. It is slightly dusty, and earthy, rich but again tending towards savory rather than sweet, although the dried fruits and molasses are definitely there as well. In addition, there is dry smoke from the nose and some prunes. Finish: Big and long, and very warming.

Karuizawa distillery was a small distillery in Karuizawa which produced first class malt whiskeys. There is no shortage of thawing snow at Mt Asama and due to this the chilly climate provided an excellent location for whiskey making. In 1976 therefore, the first 100% domestic malt whiskey saw the light of day at Kuruizawa. The whiskey was stored in small barrels, the distillery furthermore used small pots for distillation. This very small distillery was noted for producing whiskey of the finest quality.
