Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, Nikka is an institution of Japanese whisky and a testament to the founder's uncompromising vision. Taketsuru was the first Japanese person to go to Scotland and learn traditional Scotch whisky-making. He later returned to Japan, determined to create the first authentic Japanese whisky, which would be rooted in Scottish methods while shaped by Japan’s natural environment.
Nikka's distilleries are intentionally situated in contrasting environments. Yoichi’s rugged coastal climate and Miyagikyo’s softer, forested setting allow each to produce whiskies with distinct personalities. Careful attention is paid to water sources, still shapes, peat, yeast and maturation conditions, all of which contribute to a wide spectrum of flavors that form the backbone of Nikka’s blending style.
Nikka is known for its bold house style and technical precision. From the use of coal-fired stills to diverse cask management and complex blending, the company continues to push boundaries. Today, Nikka whiskies are celebrated worldwide for their intensity, balance and authenticity, earning critical acclaim and securing the brand’s place among the most respected names in global whisky.
