The Artist – Takuya Kuroda

Takuya Kuroda was born in Kobe, just 80 miles from where the Nagahama Distillery sits today.

He is a forward-thinking musician that has developed a unique hybrid sound, blending soulful jazz, funk, post-bop, fusion and hip hop music.

After following in the footsteps of his trombonist brother playing in big bands, he relocated to New York to study jazz & contemporary music at The New School in Union Square. Following graduation, Takuya established himself further in the NYC jazz scene, performing with the likes of Akoya Afrobeat and in recent years with DJ Premier’s BADDER band. Takuya Kuroda is already incredibly prolific and has fortified a solid reputation in the global jazz scene.

For this collaboration, dekanta has been given the privilege of releasing a double LP, unique version of Takuya’s most recent album – Midnight Crisp – featuring two previously unreleased, dekanta exclusive remixes.

Each of the 8 tracks takes you on a sensory journey through the Japanese and New York Jazz scene, with Takuya delivering mesmerizing performances that take several listens to fully explore.

The two remixed tracks were created by prominent remixer, Wajeed, and British multi-instrumentalist, producer/remixer, DJ, and artist Kaidi Tatham.

Nagahama Islay Cask Single Malt Whisky

Founded in 2016, Nagahama is one of Japan’s smallest distilleries, situated next to Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. They produce a spirit as crisp and elegant as the distillery’s surroundings and are one of the fastest rising craft distilleries in all of Japan. The distillery is so small, that all of the stills, mash tuns and washbacks are stored in a single room and Nagahama has a capacity of just 200L of whisky per day, which isn’t even enough to fill a cask.

Since their inception, the distillery has created a beautiful range of top quality single malt whiskies, most often sold as single cask or small batch releases. On top of that, they are responsible for the innovative and multi-award-winning Amahagan World Blended Whisky series.

For Whisky & Midnight, we bottled a Nagahama single malt whisky that was distilled in 2018 and matured in a quarter cask that had previously housed whisky from one of Islay’s most prominent distilleries, famous for their heavily peated expressions.

Compelling Flavor Profile

The ex-Islay quarter cask has had a very obvious influence on the whisky, with typical Nagahama notes of gentle yuzu, vanilla, desiccated coconut and subtle honey being backed up by gradually building notes of peat, charred oak and rich fruits. The combination is to die for, with gentler and more powerful notes working in tandem to create a waltz on your palate.

It’s a truly magnificent expression that will take you several drams to fully dissect, as it takes your senses on a journey from the idyllic Nagahama still room to the glass from which you sip. When combined with the groovy, colorful music of Takuya Kuroda, it creates a sensory experience that will have your taste buds and your feet dancing.
