The Asaka distillery is one of Japan’s newest and they have already caught the attention of avid whisky drinkers everywhere with their first single malt expressions. The Asaka The First was a huge success and a whisky we enjoyed thoroughly, so when we got the chance to bottle a cask of Asaka single malt to celebrate our 5th anniversary, we grabbed it with both hands. The award-winning Asaka Aoi Edition was matured in a single first-fill bourbon cask that has imparted a range of light fruity and vallinin notes onto the creamy, gentle liquid. Featuring our founder, Makiyo Masa, on the label and limited to just 343 bottles upon release, it’s a collectible expression and a unique gift for Valentine’s.

Mars Komagatake Limited Edition 2020

This Mars Komagatake whisky is a special limited edition released in 2020. It’s a single malt distilled at the brilliant Shinshu distillery and matured in a combination of Sherry and American White Oak casks, before being bottled at 50%. Expect mixed fruits, vanilla, sweet honey and a gentle, creamy mouthfeel. In the past, these limited releases from Mars have won a number of awards for their excellence, and we wouldn’t be surprised if this expression followed suit. A fine whisky that also makes a memorable gift.

Nikka Coffey Malt

Initially only released as part of single casks, Nikka decided to add their Coffey Malt to their core range in 2014. Coffey stills are normally used for grain whisky production, and they make the malt delightfully fruity and spicy. This expression is one of our all-time favourites here at dekantā. Distilled in the continuous Coffey stills at the Miyagikyo distillery, which were imported from Scotland in 1963, it’s a fruity and spicy malt whisky made in a grain whisky still – something you won’t find outside of Japan.

Ichiro’s Malt – Chichibu Single Cask Peated

This superb single cask offering from Ichiro’s Malt and the Chichibu distillery was matured in a single hogshead cask that has imparted a delicious array of light, fruity and vanillin notes onto the already smooth and balanced Chichibu spirit. Released in 2015, all 290 cask strength bottles sold out in no time at all, however we managed to get our hands on some so that you can too. This incredible creation is the perfect gift for the avid-whisky drinker and collector in your life.

Akkeshi Kanro 2020

The Akkeshi Kanro is the first release in the distillery’s new “24 Solar Terms” lineup. This exciting range of bottles will explore the effects that the local climate, wildlife and farming activity have on the exceptional liquid being produced by the distillery, with Kanro translating to “cold dew”. It was created using peated malt whisky that was matured in a mix of bourbon, wine, mizunara and sherry wood before being married to create a smooth, intriguing and flavourful expression. One of the oldest expressions in the Yamazaki range, the 25 Year Old has become increasingly difficult to get your hands on in recent times, and is a result it is highly sought after by collectors and investors alike. It’s a deep, rich expression that brings lots of sherried fruits, bitter dark chocolate, a creamy mouthfeel and gentle spices that build in the background. The sheer quality of this whisky has resulted in it picking up an inordinate amount of awards over the years, including being named “World’s Best Single Malt Whisky” at the World Whiskies Awards 2012.

This gorgeous Suntory Tomi No Oka Koshu white wine was created by Suntory from locally grown Koshu grapes. The grape is famous in Japan and beyond for the smooth, complex and gently fruity notes that it brings to each expression and this one is one of the best we’ve tried. The Tomi No Oka winery has become increasingly famous for their wonderful expressions in recent years and we’ll likely be hearing a lot more about them in years to come.

Ki No Bi Kyoto Japanese Dry Gin

“KI NO BI” which translates to “The Beauty of the Seasons” is inspired by tradition and is distilled, blended and bottled in Kyoto. The gin is made in a recognizable dry style but with a distinct Japanese accent. It was the first Japanese gin ever made in Kyoto. It was created with Japanese botanicals such as yellow yuzu from the north of Kyoto Prefecture, hinoki wood chips (Japanese cypress), bamboo, gyokuro tea from the Uji region and green sanshō (Japanese peppercorn) berries. A wonderfully complex and tasty expression that is perfect on the rocks or used in cocktails.

Ki No Bi Cask Aged 16th Edition

This delicious KI NO BI expression from the brilliant Kyoto distillery was created using a variation on the 11 botanical, 6 element recipe of the classic KI NO BI dry gin. It brings elegant fruits of summer backed up by gentle herbal tones, with just a smidgen of spice creeping in towards the finish. This Ki No Bi Cask aged is a 16th Edition bottle. This is a unique and difficult to find bottle, so grab yours while you can!

SG Shochu Kome

An incredible rice-based Shochu from the up and coming SG brand that was brewed very slowly at a low temperature to create fruity flavours of ripe pineapple, freshly cut apple and gentle orange peel. It’s a complex and well-balanced expression that has smooth and silky mouthfeel. Perfect for shochu-lovers, or those wanting to give Japan’s best-selling spirit a try.
