Every year, Suntory release a special limited expression to celebrate the approaching year. These bottles are always created to resemble the zodiac animal for said year and they’re always stunning to look at. 2021 is the Year of the OX and the ceramic bottle is elegantly designed and painted to showcase the animal in all its glory. What’s more, it also holds exquisite liquid inside, made from the finest malts and grains from the drinks giant’s most famous distilleries.
Perhaps the most common entry point into the world of Ichiro. As the name suggests, it is made from both malts and grains. This Ichiro’s malt & grain bottle is 70 cl, with an alcohol strength of 46%. With a somewhat sweet taste, it is a great bottle for those beginning to become acquainted with the whisky from Venture Whisky.
This brilliant Amahagan world blend was created by the whisky masters at the up and coming Nagahama distillery. It is the latest in a string of world blended releases from the distillery, all of which have been huge hits with whisky fans around the world. This latest edition was matured in a mizunara cask that has imparted an elegant range of fruity and spicy notes onto the spirit.
While maintaining the boldness of traditional Yoichi malt whisky, this blended whisky is distinguished by its soft palate. It offers whisky lovers a simple introduction to the superior quality of Yoichi malt whisky. This is a rare blended whisky, using malt whiskies distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2009 at cask strength. Everyone knows just how good the Yamazaki 18 Year Old is, and this year’s version (2019) brings the same incredible liquid inside a newly designed box. For this one, Suntory have stuck with the instantly recognisable black and gold colours of years gone by, but subtle differences to the artwork and the trim add an extra air of elegance.
Part of the new Suntory whisky range, “The Essence of Suntory” will be released on February 27th, 2018. The new range features fresh, new bottle designs and gorgeous labels showcasing modern Japanese art. Three expressions have been announced so far, one by Yamazaki, one by the Hakushu distillery, and one from Suntory’s grain distillery, Chita.
The White Oak distillery is perhaps the least known of Japan’s whisky producers. The distillery was founded by in 1888 to produce sake, and because of this, has a legitimate claim of being the country’s oldest whisky producer. In 1919, Eigashima Shuzo obtained a license to make whisky — four years before Yamazaki was built.
You’ve heard about Ichiro Akuto, right? His family have been in the alcoholic beverage making industry since the 1600s. Ichiro’s father ran the Hanyu distillery and began experimenting with whisky making until his unfortunate bankruptcy. Ichiro then founded his own distillery, named Chichibu, located in Saitama, just outside of Tokyo.
Nikka is one of our favorite Japanese companies; not only does it make world quality whisky, but its foundation story is also so intriguing that it is the subject of a television drama. The Miyagikyo is its second distillery, being founded in Sendai in 1969. This Miyagikyo bottle was strictly selected from among the finest malts, distilled and matured in a sherry cask. It’s high quality stuff, like everything else from Nikka.
