月光川のルーツ

Gakkogawa’s roots

Gakkogawa was founded by Junpei Sato-san, a lifelong sake maker driven to extend his family’s legacy into whisky. With roots in two of Japan’s most respected sake houses, Tatenokawa Shuzo and Owajiman, he grew up dedicated to the tradition of brewing and distilling before turning his focus to whisky.

Gakkogawa Distillery is where that vision came to life, a place that honours generations of craft while embracing fresh ideas. This foundation of precision and innovation has already been recognised, with a silver award at the World Whisky Awards for their 2024 New Make, a sign of the distillery’s potential.

チームワークと成長の推進

Championing teamwork & growth

When building Gakkogawa, Sato-san set out to do things differently. Rather than relying on a single point of control, he built a team where ideas are shared, decisions are collective and every detail is considered together. That structure brings a higher level of focus and consistency to the whisky.

Each day begins with conversation and alignment. The distillery’s house style is clean, elegant and balanced, with a signature fruitiness, shaped through continual experimentation with malts, yeasts and techniques. A key contributor is the use of ultra-soft Chokaisan subsoil water, one of the purest in Japan.

This approach is most evident in the cut. Rather than relying on one distiller, the team tastes and agrees on the precise moment to take the heart of the run. It ensures that every decision is measured, deliberate and aligned with the style they are working to achieve, producing a new make that is consistently balanced in the way they intend.

大きな革新と限られた生産

Big innovations & limited production

Gakkogawa is a small distillery producing just 400 casks annually, with only 36 released exclusively to private cask owners through dekantā. Their whisky is primarily matured in new and used bourbon barrels, alongside Sherry, red wine and sake-seasoned Mizunara casks.

Casks are stored in a state-of-the-art onsite warehouse, where natural spring water flows through the floor, raising humidity and reducing the angel share to support steady maturation.

Every element reflects a distillery built on a clear intent to create a well balanced whisky of character and long-term potential.

  • The experience of visiting the distillery is one which is hard to put into words. From the moment I arrived, I felt like I was a part of a family, one which is longstanding, rich in culture and impact, and a great monument in the history of Japanese whisky... Nakazato-san is truly a master at his craft and the presence he brings confirms his knowledge, care and precision to what he does. Everything must be exact...perfection is the goal.

  • I’ve enjoyed Japanese whisky for some time, so to have a chance to be part of it was an easy decision, particularly with the historical offerings made through dekanta. I already owned American and Scottish whiskey casks so adding one from Japan made sense. Finally, the opportunity to visit these distilleries was a key driver in my decision.

Location/provenance

Gakkogawa Distillery is located in the Shōnai region of Yamagata Prefecture, close to the Sea of Japan and directly beside the Gakkogawa River from which it takes its name. Behind the distillery rises Mount Chōkai, one of the defining landmarks of the region.

The landscape brings together three elements that are central to Gakkogawa whisky: mountain, river and sea. The water used at the distillery comes from the underground flow of the Gakkogawa system, fed by Mount Chōkai. It is naturally filtered as it moves through the landscape before reaching the distillery, providing the clean water that forms the basis of the spirit.

Shōnai is a beautiful part of Japan, with dramatic mountains, rivers, forests and coastline providing exceptional opportunities to experience the outdoors. Hiking and other outdoor pursuits are a natural part of visiting the region.

FAQs

What is whisky cask ownership?

Whisky cask ownership is the purchase of an entire barrel (cask) of whisky directly from a distillery, typically while the spirit is still maturing.

With dekantā, this means you own a specific cask stored in a bonded warehouse in Japan, under the supervision of the same distillery that produced it. As the legal owner, you hold the rights to that cask and the whisky inside it.

In practical terms, cask ownership offers:

Full ownership of the liquid as it matures

The ability to bottle the whisky when you choose (subject to the distillery guidelines, regulations and costs)

Access to samples and visits, allowing you to taste the whisky’s evolution over the years

A long-term, experiential asset, combining collecting, personal enjoyment, and potential value appreciation.

Do I fully own the cask?

Yes, when you purchase a cask through Dekantā, you are the legal owner of that specific cask and the whisky inside it.

Ownership is formalised with official documentation, confirming your rights while the cask is stored in a bonded warehouse at the distillery in Japan. Importantly, dekantā holds no ownership stake in your cask. They act solely as a facilitator and manager throughout the process.

This means you have full control over your asset, including the ability to:

  • Decide when to bottle your whisky
  • Receive samples and track its development
  • Visit your cask at the distillery
  • Transfer or sell ownership (subject to regulations)
Who looks after my cask?

Your cask is cared for by the distillery team in Japan, who are responsible for its storage, monitoring, and maturation over time.

While you remain the legal owner, the cask stays in a bonded warehouse at the distillery, where it is maintained under optimal ageing conditions. The distillery’s expertise ensures your whisky develops as intended, with careful oversight throughout its maturation.

Through Dekantā, the process is fully managed on your behalf. dekantā acts as your point of contact. Coordinating with the distillery, handling documentation, and arranging anything from samples to visits.

In short, the distillery looks after the whisky, while dekantā looks after the ownership experience. Ensuring everything runs smoothly from purchase through to bottling.

Can I visit my cask in Japan?

Yes and for many clients, this becomes one of the most rewarding parts of cask ownership.

Through dekantā, you can arrange visits to the distillery where your cask is stored, offering a rare opportunity to step inside the world of Japanese whisky production. These visits go far beyond a standard tour.

You’ll have the chance to meet the master distiller and their team, gain insight into their craft, and most importantly, draw a sample directly from your own cask, tasting your whisky as it evolves in real time.

Many owners choose to make this a yearly pilgrimage to Japan. With each visit, your whisky will have developed further, deepening in colour, gaining complexity, and revealing new layers of aroma and flavour. Experiencing that progression firsthand is something few whisky lovers ever have access to.

Can dekanta handle logistics for me?

Yes, dekantā manages the logistics on your behalf if you need us to, making the process as seamless as possible.

From the moment you purchase a cask through to eventual bottling and delivery, dekantā coordinates all key aspects, including:

  • Storage and compliance with the distillery in Japan
  • Documentation and ownership records
  • Sampling requests and cask visits
  • Bottling logistics, including design and packaging
  • International shipping arrangements, working with specialist partners

They also provide guidance on import regulations, duties, and shipping requirements, ensuring everything is handled correctly.

So while you retain full ownership of your cask, dekantā takes care of the operational complexity. Allowing you to focus on the experience.
