Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the visionary founder of Suntory, Yamazaki holds the distinction of being Japan’s first and oldest malt whisky distillery. Located on the outskirts of Kyoto at the confluence of the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers, the site was carefully chosen for its pure, soft waters and unique microclimate of mist and humidity. Conditions ideal for whisky maturation.
It was here that Torii, inspired by traditional Scotch methods but determined to create a whisky suited to Japanese tastes, laid the foundation for Japan’s modern whisky industry. Under the guidance of Masataka Taketsuru, who had recently returned from studying in Scotland, the distillery’s early years were marked by experimentation and innovation that defined Suntory’s house style: elegant, refined and expressive.
Over the decades, Yamazaki has become synonymous with quality. The distillery uses a remarkable variety of still shapes, cask types and yeast strains. Creating an unparalleled diversity of flavor within a single site. From American oak and sherry casks to rare Japanese Mizunara, each imparts its own nuance, allowing master blenders to construct whiskies of exceptional balance and complexity.
Today, Yamazaki remains the flagship of Japanese whisky, revered worldwide for its artistry and depth. Expressions such as the Yamazaki 12, 18 and 25 Year Old have achieved cult status among collectors and earned countless international accolades. Most recently, the Yamazaki 18 Years Old was named Supreme Champion Spirit at the International Spirits Challenge 2025. Following the Yamazaki 12 Years Old’s win in 2024 and the Yamazaki 25 Years Old’s in 2023, marking the first time in ISC history that one brand has secured the top title three years running.
