The Iwanohara Vineyard is the most popular and recognizedplace to buy wine in the Niigata Prefecture. Iwanohara is also now the oldest original wine making company in Japan, having celebrated 125 years in 2015. As a result, founder Zenbei Kawakami is currently known as the 'grandfather of Japanese wine'.The main grape variety used is the Muscat Bailey A,bred in the 1920s by Iwanohara's founder, as he sought varieties perfect for Japan's climate.
