Yamazaki Mizunara is part of the Yamazaki limited edition single malts series, designed so that whisky lovers may discover the amazing variety of unblended whiskies created by Suntory at the Yamazaki distillery. Suntory began to use homegrown Mizunara, a type of Japanese oak, after the Second World War, when supplies of foreign oak were difficult to source. This particular bottle is a 2012 release.

Nose: Delicate, fruity, orange, lime, mixed sweetened citrus, a hint of vanilla, banana, spicy, tamarind, all subtly mixed. Hint of must. Lovely nose. Mouth: Delicate fruit, but spice is more prominent now - more bitter than the sweet nose, in a good way. Cardamom tea? Some citrus still, but it isn't as fruity as on the nose. Finish: Spicy, medium length, sandalwood. Remains mildly bitter, but not over oaked.

Yamazaki is Japan's oldest whisky distillery opened in 1923, it was founded by Shinjiro Torii near Oaska. The location was chosen because of the excellent water supply in the area. This seems to have payed off, today Single Malts from the Yamazaki distillery has the largest share of any single malts whiskies in Japan. The 18 year old Yamazaki Single Malts is thought by many to be the best whisky in the world and has for example won six consecutive double gold medals at the San Francisco Spirits Competitions from 2008 to 2013.
