The Karuizawa Distillery was established in 1955 in the foothills of Mount Asama – an active volcano. The area is a popular mountain resort and the distillery is the highest in Japan at 850m above sea level. Traditional, small-scale, high-quality production is the aim, with wooden wash backs, small stills, and sherry casks from Spain, all contributing to the process. The environment is also ideal for whisky production, with low temperatures and high humidity. Karuizawa is the gold standard for rare Japanese whisky. The distillery closed its doors in 2011, although it had not been producing whisky for over a decade. This particular whisky from Karuizawa was distilled in 1981, then matured in an ex-sherry cask#152 for 34years, before being bottled in 2014. It is presented in an original box with only 566bottles ever released. If you’d like to know the taste of a rare whisky from the legendary distillery, then this is your bottle!

Nose: a pretty magnificent woodiness here, that is to say not only polished oak, but also other species, such as eucalyptus wood and many precious woods. Also a little humus and mushrooms. Perfect. One strawberry or two after ten minutes. With water: the menthol comes out, old herbal liqueurs, verbena, chartreuseÉ This is almost a blend of essential oils. Mouth (neat): huge and incredibly fruity! You would think that this massive woodiness would overwhelm the spirit and just make the whole extremely dry, while thatÕs exactly whatÕs not happening. WeÕre gravitating around sweeter citrus, that is to say kumquats, oranges and mandarins, covered with crushed cloves and ground pepper.

aruizawa distillery was a small distillery in Karuizawa which produced first class malt whiskeys. There is no shortage of thawing snow at Mt Asama and due to this the chilly climate provided an excellent location for whiskey making. In 1976 therefore, the first 100% domestic malt whiskey saw the light of day at Kuruizawa. The whiskey was stored in small barrels, the distillery furthermore used small pots for distillation. This very small distillery was noted for producing whiskey of the finest quality.
