Nose
Dried fruits and pecan pie, with early hints of wood smoke, old leather and cured ham. Later, raspberry, sour plum, kumquat and baked apple with lemon.
Palate
A powerful start of fresh citrus and spice (shichimi pepper, cloves), then gooseberry, candied ginger, mince pies and chutney, with a touch of umeboshi.
Finish
Long and intense: candied grapefruit peel, fresh lime and macadamia nut butter, ending on ripe prunes and soba-yu, the water in which buckwheat noodles are cooked.

Why Karuizawa Five Decades is special
It brings together Karuizawa malt from almost the whole of the distillery's production history. Karuizawa (a whisky distillery at the foot of Mount Asama, northwest of Tokyo) was mothballed at the end of 2000 and demolished in 2016, so its stock can never be replaced.

Karuizawa distillery was a small distillery in Karuizawa which produced first class malt whiskeys. There is no shortage of thawing snow at Mt Asama and due to this the chilly climate provided an excellent location for whiskey making. In 1976 therefore, the first 100% domestic malt whiskey saw the light of day at Kuruizawa. The whiskey was stored in small barrels, the distillery furthermore used small pots for distillation. This very small distillery was noted for producing whiskey of the finest quality. Read more about the Karuizawa distillery here!
