This bottling draws on Chichibu’s restless spirit of experimentation. The term “Chibidaru” refers to Chichibu’s specially shortened hogshead casks, essentially a Japanese quarter-cask created by trimming standard staves to produce an approximate 150-litre barrel. These smaller casks accelerate oak interaction and concentrate flavour, a technique Ichiro Akuto has used selectively to shape bold, expressive single malts.

Chichibu Distillery’s reputation for bold caskwork and small-scale craftsmanship shines here: the deft blending of different cask types yields a whisky that balances floral lift, gentle fruits and an undercurrent of spice with just a touch of peat. This release is a great illustration of why collectors prize Chichibu’s limited editions.

Tasting Notes

On the Nose

Fresh floral top notes open first, followed by orchard fruit (pear, apple) and hints of red berry from the wine cask influence. Beneath, light vanilla and toasted cereal emerge from the oak.

On the Palate

Full and rounded: concentrated orchard fruit and soft red-fruit juiciness lead, joined by caramelised malt, gentle spice (nutmeg/cinnamon) and a subtle, finely measured peat whisper from the 2013 peated component in the blend.

The Finish

Long and harmonious with lingering spice and a faint tannic echo from the red-wine and quarter-cask influence, finishing with a warm, malty sweetness.
