Nestled at the foothills of Mount Asama, an active volcano, the original Karuizawa Whisky Distillery was founded in 1955. Despite being Japan's smallest whisky producer, Karuizawa quickly earned a global reputation for crafting exceptional malt whiskies that captured the world’s imagination.

Though the distillery ceased production in 2000, becoming one of Japan’s revered ‘silent’ distilleries, its legacy endures. As the appreciation for Japanese whisky has blossomed worldwide, so too has the desire for Karuizawa’s rare treasures. Today, these exquisite bottles are cherished by collectors and enthusiasts alike, commanding record prices at prestigious auction houses around the globe.

To the delight of Karuizawa enthusiasts worldwide, the legendary distillery has been reborn under the vision of Shigeru Totsuka. With deep respect for Karuizawa’s heritage, Totsuka-san enlisted the wisdom of the late Osami Uchibori, the former Master Distiller, as a guiding advisor. He has also entrusted the role of Master Distiller to Uchibori’s most dedicated apprentice, Yoshiyuki Nakazato.

Both Totsuka-san and Nakazato-san are keenly aware of the legacy they are reviving and are passionately committed to not just honoring, but surpassing the remarkable quality of whisky once crafted by Mercian’s Karuizawa.

The new distillery finds its home in the heart of Karuizawa itself. This charming town is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, golden forests that flourish in summer, and snow-draped peaks in the winter.

Built in 2022 at the base of majestic Mount Asama, the new distillery is blessed by the pure water that flows through the volcanic lava rock surrounding it, imparting a distinctive character to every drop of whisky crafted.

The Karuizawa team is thrilled to have already welcomed some of their esteemed cask owners, inviting them to experience firsthand the wonder of owning a cask at this legendary distillery.

Totsuka-san and his team are deeply mindful of the rich legacy carried by the Karuizawa name and are committed to safeguarding it with the utmost care. With this dedication in mind, they have chosen to mature their whisky exclusively in the finest sherry casks, each requiring a minimum aging period of 10 years. This ensures that when Karuizawa single malt finally graces the market, it will embody the exceptional quality for which the distillery is renowned.
