Suntory’s origins stretch back to 1899, when the entrepreneur, Torii Shinjiro, opened a small store, selling imported wines. Today, his company is an empire. Of all Suntory’s offerings, the Hibiki is perhaps its premium blend. Only 2000 bottles were ever released of this Mount Fuji edition, making it a valuable collector’s item.
The bottle features 24 facets, representing the 24 seasons of the Japanese lunar calendar, set against a painting of Mount Fuji at sunset. Created in 1989, demand for the Hibiki blends increased after the brand’s appearance in the movie “Lost in Translation”.
The sheer understated beauty of the bottle almost resists opening. No doubt, most will be destined to become bar trophies, which is quite a shame, given that the 21 year old is considered by many experts to be the peak expression in the range. Jim Murray enthused about it in his 2015 Bible, commenting, “…it’s hard to raise the bar much higher than this. Stunning.”
