The Hanyu Distillery, producing whisky, was located in a town with the same name. The company was founded by the Akuto family, who had been in brewing business since the 1600s. In the 1980s, the company began distilling whisky, but unfortunately, this failed to last, with the company closing down in 2000. Bottles from it are, however, highly sought after.
The Hanyu 1988 ‘Full Proof Holland’ is from one of the 400 remaining casks that were saved after the distillery was dismantled. Jeroen Koetsier, from Full Proof Holland, ordered a half cask of Hanyu in 2006; he liked it so much that he ordered the other half shortly after. The labels were designed by the Dutch artist, Hans Dillesse.
